Jack Kerouac (1922-1969)

Jack Kerouac is an author born in the United States from French Canadian parents. He is best known for his book “On the Road”, which was an inspiration to the Beat Generation. I prefer his less well known, ‘Doctor Sax’, which I read in a French translation and seemed, contrary to logic, as the most appropriate language for the book. It may be because Kerouac’s first language was French, although he spoke it at home for the most part, and mainly, if not exclusively with his mother. When I read Kerouac, I think of Proust and of Ducharme.

In a memorable interview with Fernand Seguin, a very modest Kerouac, who had become an iconic figure by then, claimed that what he could do was telling a good story.

Some people are so poor, all they have is money
